WHAT IS A BLOG?
A blog is really just a website with more
dynamic content. A blogging platform makes posting content to the web as simple
as typing into an online form and clicking a button. In addition, blogs
typically allow visitors to post their own comments, making blog content more
interactive and community-friendly. A website might be referred to as a
relatively "static" informational marketing piece suitable for capturing leads.
A blog, on the other hand, gives your company a "dynamic" voice. As an added
perk, because search engines tend to reward content that is fresh and
ever-changing, blogs heighten your profile on the web.
BUSINESS BLOGGING TIPS
Often times people hear the word "blog" and
think of a personal journal - a place to connect with others who have similar
interests. This is a fine description of personal blogging. Business
blogging is different. Creating content for your business blog should be
well planned and follow the un-written code of
business blogging ethics. Following are just a few tips that can help
you successfully begin this journey (for a more in-depth look, please sign up to
receive our complimentary Business Blogger's Bible):
- Identify - Who is your target
audience - who is your ideal online customer? Make a list.
- Brainstorm - What are the
interests of your target audience? What kinds of questions do they look
to Google for answers about? Make a list.
- Plan - Come up with a content
plan for the first 30 days of your blog and make a calendar. Stick to your
schedule!
- Execute - Create specific,
value-added content (blog posts) that provide relevant answers to your client
questions list. You can't connect with that potential client unless your
content is a fitting match for the questions they seek answers to via the search engine.
- Relax - There is very little
'magic' in finding favor with the search engines. If you consistently
think about how you can provide a better online user experience and how you
can offer value-added content on a regular basis, search engines will
naturally reward you in time. If it's good for your reader, it's good
for you!
